The island of Lorenya is slowly being eaten by a black desert known as the Raught, and its inhabitants—both humans and a transforming race known as Ameleons—need a solution. Such a solution may exist in their own world, at the ruins of a battlefield that lies across the treacherous Raught, while another may exist by passing through Ahvarra, the Heart of the World, that connects Lorenya to a mid 21st century Earth.

While one Protector of the Heart travels across the barren landscape, encountering dangers and surprises, another travels through the Heart, expecting a small colony. What she finds is a world where technology and virtual reality exceed anything she's ever known... and where a descendant of Lorenya can help her find a path to her world's salvation.

But how did this world come to be built? What history is locked behind secrets that are hinted at in a journal written over centuries? The key to Lorenya's survival is found in its history, and these Protectors must bring their shared knowledge together before the Ameleons transform into their aggressive nature and bring their realm to ruin.

Can history and technology combine to save one small world?

Ahvarra The Heart of the World eBook Brian J Lang

I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys fantasy or sci-fi stories, the author manages to combine all the individual characters and stories that span different worlds and time lines into a really great book. He has created two really interesting worlds with deep histories. I have to mention how well he kept the story moving forward even though he had so many characters to work through and plot lines to tie up. He kept me interested the entire way and not once was I ever confused as to who he was talking about or what place in time the story was currently in. I would say it took me about 7-8 hours combined to read through it and it was enjoyable the entire way. I hope Mr. Lang continues to explore the world he has created regardless of what he decides to do I will be keeping an eye for his next novel.

Ahvarra The Heart of the World eBook Brian J Lang Reviews

The book is well plotted. There are several characters you follow and they all eventually intertwine. There were a couple characters I liked more than others and I didn't want to leave them, but Lang made it very obvious who you were with so there was never any confusion.
***Spoilers***
There ended up being only one bad guy and in the end he redeemed himself, kind of, which I didn't expect. I don't look for bad guys to try to redeem themselves (unless that's what the book is about) I just assume they'll eventually become evil.
The whole book was really a giant misunderstanding and the people of Lorenya came off as not being very curious.
I'm interested to see if he will be continuing the series since there's an even bigger world we never got to see. It would also be interesting to see if the real world makes any kind of impact.
I didn’t know quite what to expect when I started. I’ve always shied away from fantasy because I was put off by some of the overly elaborate plots and weird names, but I realized soon enough that such a label doesn’t quite cover this story. And what a story! There are names that aren’t familiar and worlds we haven’t heard of, but there’s bravery and surprise, tragedy, plotting and heroism and true love.

At first I was concerned when I saw how many characters populated the world, concerned they would be batted back and forth until the reader was dizzy, but I soon realized that the author had them well in hand. The voices of the characters are so well defined and clear—without being broad strokes—that one is never in any doubt as to who is narrating. And the characters are all interesting, with enough backstory to help us understand them and yet we want more; even after the story ends, we want to know what happens to them next. Some of the locales are familiar, some exotic, all intriguing. The imagery is so skillful that it is easy to imagine these lands; something which has always concerned me, that the location of the story would be difficult to envision and thus interfere with the narrative- not so, here.

It is truly impressive how this world and these people are brought to life, and then how their story is told. It moves along faster than would seem possible, yet at exactly the right speed. You find yourself rooting for different characters and against others and you think you have an inkling of what their fate might be, but you’re surprised. You have to sometimes rethink what you believed or felt about them. These are characters in a world mostly foreign to us, but they behave in completely real ways.

There’s danger, romance, longing, fear, bravery, terror- everything, and all masterfully mixed together. I really didn’t want to put it down, and I was vexed to reach the last page, knowing that the adventure was ending, at least until the next in the series appears. Because there’s no way that the story can end!

So there’s the debate- is it fantasy, is it science fiction, mystery, is it adventure? It’s easy to say that it’s all of those and more, but the most accurate thing to say was that it was a crazy good story. Want more!!
Excellent fantasy / sci- fi? story with multiple characters and story lines that easily gain and keep your attention without confusing you. The characters are well developed and really rope you in to what will happen to them next. Great ending that brought the story lines together perfectly. Thoroughly enjoyable read!
One of the keys to this story is something we've all seen or heard about; namely that people can behave differently in crowds than they do when they're alone and sometimes do things they would never think themselves capable of, good or bad. Brian has cleverly taken this psychological force and transformed it into something literally physical. When this effect is finally realized it creates the culminating and explosive conclusion to a very well-told story.

Your technique of using a character's name as a heading within chapter's allows the reader to go from century to century, place to place, with such ease that the book's action moves in an extrememly smooth manner.

The journal written over centuries gives a guideline to the development of time traveled as well as the relationship between the Humans and the Amelions. Only with the appearance of One does it all come together.

Congradulations on your first book and I'm looking forward to the next one.
It's hard to place this book on a genre--there's fantasy, sci-fi, and a smidgen of historical fiction. All of it comes together to create a story that I got lost in. The many story lines and characters were each interesting (I have a particular soft spot for One), and they came together well. I especially liked that the characters were discovering the whole history of a world, and not just enough information to solve their problems. That gave a depth to all of them and to the story as well. I hope there will be more books set in this world.
